The Department Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) offers various continuing education programs.

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS): Applied knowledge from world class research for specialists and managers

The Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS) offered by ETH Zurich and the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering provide continuing education programs for specialists and managers in industry, business, and academia. Our mission is to transfer applied knowledge from cutting-edge research to society and business. Our training programs promote the exchange of know-how and experience and support the development of valuable networks.

The School for Continuing Education offers an overview of the continuing education programs at ETH Zurich.

The CAS ETH in Advanced Materials and Processes (CAS ETH AMaP) is a highly personalized, research-oriented program in the field of advanced materials and processes. Participants benefit from the mentorship of leading experts from the ETH Competence Center for Materials and Processes (MaP), which consists of approximately eighty professors. Through an individual research project, participants deepen their methodological and technical skills and update their existing knowledge.

The CAS ETH AMaP is aimed at industry professionals with a Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences and at least five years of industrial experience in the field of materials, process and manufacturing technologies.

The CAS program is managed by the Department of Materials.

The CAS ETH in Applied Manufacturing Technology (CAS ETH AMT) provides a specialized education in the areas of manufacturing processes, production systems, material selection and product development. Participants learn about key processes and technologies driving the transition to Industry 4.0 and how they are being applied in practice to develop new and innovative products across various industries.

The CAS ETH AMT is intended for non-technical managers with a minimum of five years of work experience in a relevant industry (finance, marketing, strategy, and other non-technical departments).

The CAS ETH AMT is part of the MAS ETH in Applied Technology.

The CAS ETH in Applied Technology in Energy (CAS ETH ATE) offers a specialized technological education in the fundamentals of energy science, energy transport, energy storage, and industrial energy applications. Participants will learn how energy supply and use are evolving from a scientific and technical perspective, and how energy technologies are being applied to products and operations in various industries.

The CAS ETH ATE is aimed at managers with limited technical backgrounds and at least five years of work experience in a relevant industry (finance, marketing, strategy, and other non-technical departments).

The CAS ETH ATE is part of the MAS ETH in Applied Technology.

The CAS ETH in Repair and Maintenance (CAS ETH ReMain) focuses on the maintainability and repairability for buildings and their components as well as on the economic evaluation of value retention and repair concepts. Participants acquire applied knowledge of sustainable and resource-saving repair strategies and learn how existing buildings can be maintained and upgraded through targeted measures. Through practical work on an exemplary repair project, they develop transdisciplinary solutions and deal with current challenges in the construction and real estate industries.

The CAS ETH ReMain is aimed at specialists in architecture, engineering, industrial design, real estate management, risk management and related fields. The aim is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of innovative repair and maintenance techniques and to promote their interdisciplinary collaboration.

The program is managed by the Department of Architecture.

The CAS ETH in Robotics is a customized, research-oriented education program in the field of robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The study plan is individually defined in collaboration with a tutor to define the research projects or to take part in ETH courses or seminars. Tutors are selected from over 30 professors affiliated with the ETH+ initiative RobotX.

The program is suited for professionals holding a Master’s degree in engineering or natural sciences (or equivalent), with a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in the fields of robotics, automation, data science, AI, or related technologies.

Teacher training: Quality in education

To prepare engineers and ETH teaching assistants for their teaching activities, the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering and ETH Zurich offer didactic courses.

The teaching certificate qualifies engineers to teach at a university of applied science and other educational institutions (excluding Swiss high schools). Participants also acquire the qualification to teach on a part-time basis to professional audiences and to accept training mandates at federal agencies, foundations, and corporations.

The program is primarily aimed at engineers who wish to take on a teaching role in in-company training or at universities of applied sciences. It can be completed alongside a Master's degree, during a doctorate or while employed.

Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Advanced Fundamentals of Mechatronics Engineering

Africa is experiencing rapid growth in its industrial sector, and it is projected to grow further over the coming decades. Therefore, the demand for know-how in the field of mechatronics engineering is growing.

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program in Advanced Fundamentals of Mechatronics Engineering is a joint educational program of ETH Zurich and the Ashesi University in Ghana. It trains graduates specifically to address technical problems in the field of mechatronics tailored for industrial development in sub-Saharan Africa.

The courses provide students with advanced competences in physics, electronics, control, and related mathematical and computer-based methods. Leveraging on the knowledge that students acquired during their Bachelor program, the courses expand their theoretical background and implement the theories to relevant applications of mechatronics. The program consists of a series of block courses delivered by ETH lecturers at Ashesi University in Ghana and complements the graduate MSc and MPhil in Mechatronics Engineering programs by Ashesi University.

Graduates of the MAS ETH in Advanced Fundamentals of Mechatronics possess the critical thinking skills and hands-on technical expertise needed by industries worldwide and Africa in particular, to ensure sustainable growth of Africa’s industrialization and economic development.

Melanie Zeilinger and Edoardo Mazza from D-MAVT are on the directorate of the program.
