Continuing education
The Department Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) offers various continuing education programs.
The Teaching Certificate opens the possibility to teach at a university of applied science and other educational institutions (excluding Swiss high schools). It also opens the possibility to teach on a part-time basis to professional audiences, including government officials, foundations and companies.
The program is targeted primarily towards engineers who wish to later provide in-house company training or teaching at a college of applied sciences. The program can be pursued in parallel to a Master's Program, during the doctoral studies or while employed and typically lasts one to two years. The CAS in Applied Manufacturing Technology (AMT) provides a targeted education in the design and manufacture of engineered products. Participants will learn about the most important processes and advanced technologies driving the transition to Industry 4.0 and how they are being applied in practice to develop new and innovative products across various industries.
The program is intended for managers and professionals who do not have an in-depth technical background in this area and would like to broaden their knowledge of new production technologies. The aim is to qualify the participants to work at the interface between production and development-intensive environments.
The CAS AMT consists of four modules taken over a 14 week period from January to April:
- Manufacturing Processes
- Production Systems
- Product Development & Technology Implementation
- Materials
Classes are generally conducted in either a block format or blended learning format to minimize time away from work. Workload is approximately 300 hours and successful graduates earn a total of 12 ECTS credits.

Transport and traffic systems are changing rapidly. Persons concerned with transportation systems face many diverse challenges, such as overburdened and costly transportation structures, increasing energy consumption and the associated climate change, and digitization in more and more areas.
The interdisciplinary Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program and its three integrated Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Future Transport Systems provide a broad and solid basis for addressing these challenges.
Graduates of the MAS ETH in Future Transport Systems are in a position to identify and implement integrated, sustainable transport solutions in their own fields, and (for example) to translate them into new marketable transport systems or new business models.
The ETH CAS certificates provide targeted further training in the areas of "System Aspects of Transport", "Technology Potential" and "New Business Models".
Graduates will be working to shape the transport systems of the future.
Africa is experiencing rapid growth in its industrial sector and it is projected to grow further over the coming decades. Therefore, the demand for know how in the field of mechatronics engineering is growing.
The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program in Advanced Fundamentals of Mechatronics Engineering trains graduates specifically to address technical problems in the field of mechatronics tailored for industrial development in sub-Saharan Africa.
The courses provide students with advanced competences in physics, electronics, control, and related mathematical and computer-based methods. Leveraging on the knowledge that students acquired during their Bachelor program, the courses expand their theoretical background and implement the theories to relevant applications of mechatronics. The program consists of a series of block courses delivered by ETH lecturers at Ashesi University in Ghana, and complements the graduate MSc and MPhil in Mechatronics Engineering programs by Ashesi University.
Graduates of the MAS ETH in Advanced Fundamentals of Mechatronics possess the critical thinking skills and hands-on technical expertise needed by industries worldwide and Africa in particular, to ensure sustainable growth of Africa’s industrialization and economic development.
The CAS ETH ReMain focuses on the scalable repair and maintenance strategies for buildings and their components as well as economic concepts of value preservation. The program is aimed at graduates and professionals in the fields of architecture and civil engineering, mechanical and process engineering, as well as product and industrial design. The goal is to train specialists who would like to contribute to sustainability in the construction industry by acquiring the relevant competences.
D-ARCH is the leading department in the program.
