Conferral of the doctoral degree

The doctoral thesis supervisor must approve the final version of a doctoral thesis and inform the D-MAVT Doctoral Administration in writing at least one week prior to the invitation to the Department Conference, for which the acceptance of the thesis is scheduled. The title and content of the doctoral thesis may no longer be changed, once it has been approved by the Department Conference.

The D-MAVT Doctoral Administration prepares the list of candidates to receive the doctoral degree, as well as a list of those candidates not recommended for conferral. The list is based of the examination committees’ reports and the additional approval requested for minor revisions.

The D-MAVT Doctoral Administration includes the list of candidates as an attachment to the invitation to the Department Conference, which is distributed one week prior to the Department Conference.

After the approval by the Department Conference, applies to the Rector for the conferral of the doctoral degree. On behalf of the rector, the ETH Doctoral Administration then de-registers all graduated doctoral students on the day of the Department Conference at which the doctoral thesis was approved and issues a provisional confirmation of completion of the doctorate. The final confirmation and the conferral of the doctoral degree will be issued only after the doctoral student has submitted the final copies of his or her final copies of their thesis.

The Blumer Funds reimburses some of the printing cost of the doctoral thesis. To apply for this, the Download Request of Reimbursement (PDF, 201 KB) form must be submitted to with the receipt of payment.
