Second advisor

In agreement with the doctoral candidate, the doctoral thesis supervisor designates an academically qualified person with proven expertise who, as a second advisor, provides the doctoral candidate with additional specialist support and task-related advice.

D-MAVT requires that the second advisor hold a doctoral degree and that he/she should preferably be a professor or permanent scientist. The second advisor is significantly involved in the development of the doctoral plan and part of the committee of the aptitude colloquium.

The appointment of a second supervisor is mandatory for all doctoral students and must be reported to the ETH Doctoral Administration. Doctoral students appoint their second advisor before the qualifying colloquium (deadline = admission date + 12 months)

The second advisor can also act as co-examiner. In this case, only persons who also fulfill the requirements for co-examiners can be considered.
