Mentoring for first-semester students
D-MAVT offers a peer-to-peer mentoring program for first-semester students. Mechanical engineering students from advanced semesters are on hand to give personal support to first-semester students with all questions regarding their studies.
A new phase of life begins with taking up a university study program. Along with mastering the course material, students have to find their way around the department, make new friends and perhaps even settle in a new city. To make this transition easier, the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) offers a mentoring program by students for students. All mentors have successfully studied at D-MAVT for at least two semesters.

Registration for mentees starting in the Fall Semester 2025: 2 September 2025
After registering for the mentoring program, all mentees will receive the contact details of their mentors one to two weeks before the start of the semester. At the same time, mentors will also receive the contact details of their mentees. Normally, your mentor will get in touch with you within three days. If your mentor does not contact you, D-MAVT recommends that mentees reach out to their mentor to seek tips and support.
How often a mentoring tandem communicates and whether they do so via email, WhatsApp, Teams, or in person is up to them.

Any first-semester student who missed the official registration deadline (2 September 2025) for the mentoring program can contact us at .
Please include the following in your email:
- Salutation
- First name
- Last name
- Email address
- Educational qualification (Swiss Matura, Foreign Matura, Passarelle)
- Preferred language (German or English)
And please confirm: I agree that my first name, last name, and email address will be shared with the assigned mentor for the purpose of the mentoring program.
If you would like to become a mentor and support first-semester students, you can register directly using the form on this website. In general, mentoring is not very time-consuming, so it should be possible to support several students. Especially in the first few weeks around the start of the semester, many questions about the study program will need to be clarified. The support for mentees ends after the first semester. Of course, mentor and mentee may stay in contact beyond that.
After you have registered as a mentor, you will receive the contact details of your mentees by e-mail at the beginning of September. Please get in touch within three days of receiving the e-mail.
To support all mentors, D-MAVT offers an introduction to mentoring. This introduction takes place on 27 August 2025 at 5.15 pm via Zoom and will be recorded. All registered mentors will receive an invitation with the Zoom link in advance.
In addition, all mentors are cordially invited to a networking event with an aperitif in the fall semester of 2025. The aperitif will take place as part of the Erfolgreich@MAVT event, where mentors can meet their mentee.
