Frequently Asked Questions for Outgoing Students

You are a currently enrolled D-MAVT student in good academic standing (~ 5.0) as well as in the normal cycle/standard period of the study program.

You can undertake an exchange semester in the third year of your Bachelor's degree or the first year of your Master's degree at D-MAVT. However, D-MAVT recommends the first year of the Master's program as the ideal time for the exchange semester. Furthermore, applicants who best match our ideal exchange profile will be given priority in the allocation of places.

  • Worldwide “ETH-wide programme”, “Swiss-European Mobility Programme Student Mobility for Studies (SEMP SMS)” or “Swiss Mobility”: You can apply for an exchange semester in ETH-wide, SEMP SMS or Swiss Mobility directly via the normal Mobility-Online application portal.
  • Worldwide “departmental programme”: You should apply for the D-MAVT preselection via the special link of Mobility-Online until 1 December for the following academic year. If you are nominated for one of the partner institutions in departmental programme after the D-MAVT preselection, you must apply for where you are nominated again via the normal Mobility-Online.
  • Please note that the minimum requirements of ETH Zurich must be met in any case.
  • Worldwide “ETH-wide programme”: The selection takes place centrally in the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office and the grade of your first-year examinations for Bachelor’s study is decisive for regardless of where you are in your studies.
  • Worldwide “departmental programme”, “Swiss-European Mobility Programme Student Mobility for Studies (SEMP SMS)” or “Swiss Mobility”: D-MAVT Student Exchange makes the selection. Although all students who meet the minimum requirements of ETH Zurich are allowed to apply, our Bachelor’s students who are in the fifth semester and who plan to pursue their Master’s studies at D-MAVT are given priority during the allocation process, once all received applications have been reviewed and ranked by using weighted grade point averages.

No. You may not apply for several programmes at once, but only for one at a time.

If you are interested in participating in a student exchange program for a second time, please note that non-study abroad students will be given higher placement priority at D-MAVT.

Unfortunately not. D-MAVT students go on exchange to destinations based on reciprocal agreements between D-MAVT and those institutions in- and outside of Switzerland.

  • If your study abroad was not in the framework of ETH Zurich exchange programme but self-organized, the credits can’t be recognized for your study at ETH Zurich.
  • All project and thesis work abroad is self-organized. You should first discuss the thesis/project abroad with your tutor and supervisor. Once they agree, you can conduct the research outside ETH Zurich, but you must register for the course at ETH Zurich and will be graded by your ETHZ thesis/project supervisor. Therefore, project and thesis work are not recognized as exchange programs.

Frequently Asked Questions for Incoming Students

There has to be a formal exchange agreement between your home university and ETH Zurich. You can ask the coordinator at your home university if such an agreement exists.

  • Project mobility students: If you meet certain requirements, yes. See details.
  • Exchange students: If you find an ETH professor as supervisor, yes. It is your responsibility to find a supervisor and upload the supervisor’s confirmation when you apply for your exchange at ETH Zurich.

After the start of the semester, the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office will ask you by email to update your final choice of courses in Mobility-Online by the end of the second week of the semester. After the add and drop phase, the recorded enrolments in Mobility-Online and myStudies must be identical.

According to the ETH Zurich study guideline, two-thirds of your course credits must be offered by the department you are applying to. Exceptions are possible for interdisciplinary study programs. However, it is not about whether you are in an interdisciplinary study program at your home institute but if a course is offered in an interdisciplinary study program at ETH Zurich. For instance, if a course doesn’t start with 151 but is offered in MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control, it is a subject for D-MAVT Student Exchange to make an exception for your study plan at ETH Zurich.

When requesting your transcript, you will have to check out if all grades are published in myStudies. If yes, D-MAVT Student Exchange can provide you with an e-Transcript upon request.
