Smartwatches for high schoolers
During the ETH Studienwoche from 3 to 7 June 2019, 30 high school students built their own smartwatches. They were supported by researchers and students from D-MAVT and D-ITET.
Martin Schütz from the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory was responsible for the project at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering. To get started, he introduced the group to product development and design. Soon after, the students started working on the watch. Within one day, each of the participants designed a CAD housing based on Schütz's template. The group was supported by five student assistants.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the group did the welding and programming at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The CAD drafts were printed out to assemble the final product, the Smartwatch, on Friday.
In addition to the project work, two students presented the study programs of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. The student organization AMIV invited to a barbecue, and at the official dinner the students got to know the focus project Varileg.
ETH Studienwoche
Every year, the ETH Studienwoche gives about 120 high school students the opportunity to realize a project together with ETH researchers. They gain an insight into a field of study and into the scientific working methods at one of the leading technical and scientific universities. The content is organized by the departments. The cooperation between D-MAVT and D-ITET helps prospective students to understand the differences and similarities between the two courses.
