Ambizione grant for Isabella Schalko
Isabella Schalko has received an Ambizione grant from SNF for her research project "Ecological fluid dynamics for habitat creation in river systems". She will start at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics on 1 November 2022.
Isabella Schalko worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT after finishing her PhD at ETH Zurich, D-BAUG. Her Ambizione project is affiliated with Professor Filippo Coletti as a host at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering.
In her research project, Schalko wants to describe in detail the flow conditions of local nature-based restoration measures in order to improve their design and thus create habitats for fish or other aquatic animals. To analyze local flow velocities and turbulence structures, Schalko will use high-speed cameras. She further wants to investigate the influence on sediment transport and the behavior of macroinvertebrates depending on the respective nature-based measures, for example deadwood structures. As part of the project, a stay at MIT is planned as well as a collaboration with the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB).
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering of ETH Zurich, Isabella Schalko!
