Students meet the labs

How do students find the right topic for their Bachelor's thesis? How does one get a tutor for the Master's program? The "Meet your lab" exhibition provides answers.

After being held online in the past two years, the “Meet your lab” live exhibition had a revival on 9 November 2022. For two hours over lunch, students had the opportunity to meet professors from the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) and their labs. At booths in the CLA hall and the foyers of the LEE building, they showcased their research.

Providing an overview

The exhibition provides Bachelor’s students insights into the research conducted by the nearly 50 professors from the department's eight institutes. Indeed, it is this diversity that makes it difficult for students to gain an overview and find a suitable topic for their Bachelor's thesis. "It's important for students to interact with the labs and find out what areas they are interested in", says Maddalena Velonà, D-MAVT study coordinator. "Not only for the bachelor's thesis, but also for the Master's program afterwards, since they need a tutor for that." Tutors coach, guide, and advise students during their studies and in arranging their study plan. Since most Bachelor's alumni also do their Master's studies at D-MAVT, the exhibition is an opportunity to plan for the next step.

In addition to visitors from the Bachelor's program, the exhibition also attracted Master's students and generated a lot of interest from them. "I am looking for a topic for my Master's thesis. There are areas I haven't had much to do with so far, but which would still interest me and which I can get to know better here," said Chantal Woodtli, a third-semester Master's student.

Last but not least, the numerous posters, videos and demonstrations by doctoral students, lab members and professors also provided exciting insights into research activities for other employees of the department who took advantage of the lunchtime to visit.

Information events for students

"Meet your lab" is usually held each year in November. The past two years, the event had to switch to an online version due to the Corona pandemic. However, this could not replace the personal exchange on site, which was also shown by the lively participation this year.

D-MAVT offers other information events to support students during the different phases of their studies. More information is available on the Student's Information Event website.
