Aurel Stodola Laureate 2022

Hod Lipson, Professor at Columbia University's Creative Machines Lab, was awarded the Aurel Stodola Medal by the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering. As part of the award ceremony, Lipson gave a lecture on the automation of cognitive processes.

"With the medal, we honor the achievements of outstanding researchers whose work is in the tradition of Aurel Stodola," introduced Edoardo Mazza, Department Head D-MAVT and Professor of Mechanics, to begin of the festive event at ETH Zurich's Audi Max auditorium. Stodola, Mazza said, was a Professor at D-MAVT in the early 20th century and a pioneer in several research areas ranging from thermodynamics to medical technology. His legacy continues to resonate today.

The recipient of the annual medal and Aurel Stodola Laureate 2022 is Hod Lipson. A Professor at Columbia University's Creative Machines Lab, he is an expert in engineering and data science. In his laudation, Robert Katzschmann, Professor of Robotics at D-MAVT, gave an overview of the highlights of his scientific career.

Hod Lipson reported during lecture, that his career also included some detours. For example, experiments that had previously been successful in the simulation failed in reality. Nevertheless, this was no reason for him to give up. After all, this is exactly what his research is about: cognitive processes and the automation of such processes through artificial intelligence.

The lecture ended with a Q&A session, which was actively engaged, and an aperitif.
